Attending a conference in Jeddah: travel and visa guide

Practical guidance for educators travelling to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a professional conference — visas, flights, getting around, and what to expect on the ground.

Visas and entry

Saudi Arabia issues tourist eVisas to citizens of a long list of countries, and these are commonly used for short professional visits such as conferences. Residents of GCC countries and holders of certain US, UK and Schengen visas may have simplified options.

Rules change, so check the official Saudi eVisa portal for your nationality before booking non-refundable travel, and confirm passport validity — six months beyond your travel date is the safe assumption.

  • Apply for the eVisa in advance rather than relying on arrival options
  • Check that your passport has at least six months' validity
  • Keep a digital and printed copy of your conference registration
  • Confirm whether your employer needs an invitation letter for reimbursement

Flights and arrival

Jeddah is served by King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED), with direct connections across the Gulf, Middle East, South Asia, Africa and Europe. Arriving the day before a two-day conference is strongly advised — morning registration usually opens before 08:00.

Immigration and baggage at JED can take time during peak pilgrimage seasons. Build a buffer if you are arriving the evening before an early start.

Getting around the city

Uber and Careem both work well in Jeddah and are the simplest option for most visitors. Taxis are available but agree the fare in advance. Traffic between north Jeddah and the city centre is heaviest in the early morning and late afternoon.

If you are staying near the campus in north Jeddah, journeys are short. Corniche hotels are pleasant but add travel time on conference mornings.

What to expect on the ground

Jeddah is the most relaxed of the Kingdom's major cities and used to international visitors. Modest professional dress is the norm for conferences; abayas are not required for visiting women, though shoulders and knees covered is the practical standard.

Prayer times punctuate the day and some shops close briefly. Conference schedules account for this. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and English is widely spoken in professional and hospitality settings.

  • Currency: Saudi Riyal (SAR), cards widely accepted
  • Weather: hot and humid most of the year — indoor venues are air-conditioned
  • Weekend: Friday and Saturday
  • Time zone: UTC+3

A short packing list for conference days

Sessions in early years settings mean sitting on low chairs and floors, moving between buildings, and handling materials. Comfortable shoes and a light layer for strong air conditioning make more difference than anything else you pack.

  • Photo ID matching your registration name (needed for campus security)
  • Comfortable, modest professional clothing and flat shoes
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Notebook or tablet — many workshops are hands-on

SOAR 2027 is hosted on the AISJ campus in north Jeddah, roughly 30–40 minutes from King Abdulaziz International Airport.
