Implementing play-based learning and guided inquiry in bilingual classrooms
Play-based learning in a bilingual (Arabic-English) early years classroom works best when play is planned around language goals: adults model vocabulary in both languages during play, provocations invite children's questions, and guided inquiry turns those questions into short investigations.
What guided inquiry means in the early years
Guided inquiry is learning that starts with a child's question and is shaped by the teacher. The child leads the curiosity; the adult chooses materials, asks open questions and helps children record what they find. It sits between free play and direct instruction.
Planning play around two languages
In bilingual classrooms, play areas double as language environments. Label areas in Arabic and English, plan the key words for each provocation in both languages, and agree which adult models which language so children hear rich, consistent input.
- Choose 5–8 target words per provocation in each language
- Use songs, rhymes and story props from both cultures
- Let children answer in whichever language they choose — then recast
- Display children's words and drawings in both scripts
A simple inquiry cycle
Most early years inquiries follow four steps that fit into a week or two of play.
- Notice: observe what children return to in play
- Wonder: capture their questions in their own words
- Investigate: offer materials, visits or experts to explore
- Share: let children show what they learned to families
Assessing learning through play
Short observations, photos and children's own explanations are stronger evidence than worksheets. Track both language development and concept learning, and share examples with families through a learning journal.
Partnering with families
Families in the Gulf often expect visible academic progress. Explain how play builds early literacy and numeracy, invite parents to see a provocation in action, and send home vocabulary in both languages so learning continues at home.
Practical sessions on play, inquiry and bilingual early years practice run throughout SOAR 2027 at AISJ Jeddah on Saturday, April 17, 2027.
